Air Force Gallant Unit Citation Streamer
The Air Force Gallant Unit Citation Streamer represents extraordinary heroism demonstrated by a United States Air Force organization while engaged in military operations against an armed enemy of the United States.
The Gallant Unit Citation (GUC) was approved by the Secretary of the Air Force in March 2004 and recognizes qualifying actions occurring on or after September 11, 2001.
The award may be presented to Air Force Active Duty, Air Force Reserve, and Air National Guard units that distinguish themselves through extraordinary heroism while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an opposing foreign force.
Award Criteria
To qualify for the Gallant Unit Citation, an organization must perform with marked distinction under difficult and hazardous conditions, setting the unit apart from and above other organizations participating in the same conflict.
Although the Gallant Unit Citation requires a lesser degree of gallantry, determination, and esprit de corps than the Presidential Unit Citation, the standards remain exceptionally high.
The degree of heroism required for the Gallant Unit Citation is equivalent to that which would warrant award of the Silver Star to an individual.
The award is normally earned through participation in a single action or a series of successive actions occurring over a relatively brief period. Extended combat duty or participation in a large number of operational missions alone does not qualify an organization for the award.
