Army Superior Unit Award Streamer
The Army Superior Unit Award Streamer represents outstanding meritorious performance by a United States Army organization while accomplishing a difficult and challenging mission under extraordinary circumstances.
The Army Superior Unit Award (ASUA) was established by the Secretary of the Army on April 8, 1985. The award was created to recognize Army organizations whose exceptional performance and devotion to duty clearly distinguished them from other units performing similar missions.
Award Criteria
The Army Superior Unit Award recognizes units that demonstrate outstanding meritorious performance during peacetime while accomplishing a difficult and challenging mission under extraordinary circumstances.
For purposes of the award, extraordinary circumstances are those that do not represent the normal day-to-day conditions under which the organization normally performs, or could reasonably be expected to perform, its mission.
The unit must demonstrate outstanding devotion and superior performance of exceptionally difficult tasks sufficient to distinguish it from and above other organizations with similar missions.
The award may also recognize qualifying humanitarian operations when the organization meets the established Army criteria.
Streamer Design
The Army Superior Unit Award Streamer is Scarlet Red with a Green center stripe bordered on each side by a narrow Yellow stripe.
The official stripe pattern is:
Scarlet – Yellow – Green – Yellow – Scarlet
The authorized inscription is embroidered in White.
Unlike campaign streamers, the Army Superior Unit Award is a unit decoration streamer. The inscription normally identifies the location and/or date or period of service for which the organization received the award.
Historical Significance
The Army Superior Unit Award was developed because existing Army unit awards primarily recognized combat service. Army leadership determined that exceptional organizational performance during demanding peacetime missions also deserved formal recognition.
The award provides permanent recognition of the collective professionalism, dedication, superior performance, and devotion to duty demonstrated by the members of the cited organization.
Army organizations awarded the Army Superior Unit Award may display the appropriate streamer on their organizational color, distinguishing flag, or guidon in accordance with applicable Army regulations.
