Navy Unit Commendation Streamer
The Navy Unit Commendation Streamer represents exceptionally meritorious service by a United States Navy or Marine Corps organization that distinguished itself through outstanding performance during military operations.
The Navy Unit Commendation (NUC) recognizes units whose collective performance and accomplishments were exceptional and clearly distinguished the organization from other units performing similar service.
The award may recognize outstanding performance during combat operations or other military operations of significant importance. Normal performance of duty, routine participation in combat operations, or participation in numerous missions does not by itself meet the standard required for the Navy Unit Commendation.
Streamer Design
The Navy Unit Commendation Streamer consists of seven distinctive stripes:
Blue – Yellow – Red – Green – Red – Yellow – Blue
Green forms the center stripe, with the Red, Yellow, and Blue stripes arranged symmetrically on each side.
The authorized inscription is embroidered in White.
The exact inscription displayed on the streamer is determined by the official citation and unit award documentation associated with the organization receiving the commendation.
Award Significance
The Navy Unit Commendation recognizes the collective accomplishments, professionalism, determination, and devotion to duty of the personnel assigned to the cited organization.
Historically, the standard for the Navy Unit Commendation required unit service comparable in character to that which would merit an individual award of the Silver Star Medal or Legion of Merit.
The award may be presented to qualifying Navy ships, aviation squadrons, task organizations, shore commands, Marine Corps organizations, and other eligible naval units.
Personnel who were attached to and actually serving with the organization during the period for which the unit was commended may be authorized to wear the corresponding Navy Unit Commendation ribbon in accordance with Department of the Navy regulations.
